Hazel Class

Hello! Welcome to Hazel Class

Hazel class is our Reception and Year 1 class. It is taught by Miss Richardson and supported by Mrs Napper and Mrs Perkins. Mrs Davies teaches the class every Tuesday.

In The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum (EYFS), the seven areas of learning consist of three prime areas and four specific areas.

The prime areas are fundamental, work together, and move through to support development in all other areas:

• Personal, Social and Emotional Development

• Communication and Language

• Physical Development

The specific areas include essential skills and knowledge for children to participate successfully in society. They grow out of the prime areas, and provide important contexts for learning. :

• Literacy

• Mathematics

• Understanding the World

• Expressive Arts and Design

Learning through play

We use the children’s interests to plan and deliver a mix of adult directed tasks whilst providing plenty of opportunities for child initiated activities. Children learn best when they are having fun, through carefully thought out and structured play activities.

Reading

We share lots of special stories throughout the school dayViolet Class children particularly enjoy taking a vote to show their preference for the story they would like their teacher to read. Our book corner is a cosy space for you to get comfy whilst reading your favourite books and you can also make up our own stories using puppets and other small world props.

Phonics

We use Read Write Inc. to help you learn your sounds and Fred the Frog helps you learn to blend and read words. When you take home your school reading books, we encourage you to read each night. If you read 5 times in a week, you get a sticker on a bookmark and when you fill up your bookmark you will receive a book prize in Good News Assembly.

Writing

We do lots of activities to strengthen our muscles to support us with our writing journey. We particularly enjoy our dough discos and ‘funky finger’ challenges. You will learn how to form your letters first with some catchy rhymes, then you’ll build lots of confidence to write words and short sentences. We mark make while we play and have access to writing resources so that we have the opportunity to express our own ideas.

Messy Activities

We love getting messy! We do have aprons at school but sometimes we are so busy playing and forget to cover up so it is always best to keep a spare change of clothes (school uniform) on your peg that you can change in to. It is also a good idea to put in some spare underwear (pants and socks) in case of any accidents.
